Nurse Practitioner in USF School of Nursing

The program of study for students with a bachelor’s degree to DNP varies from 82-94 units and takes approximately 4 years to complete. The program for the nurse with an MSN takes into account previous academic coursework and clinical experiences and the required number of units are adjusted accordingly. Courses are scheduled on an alternate teaching weekend schedule and accessible to both full and part time students. A mixed mode or hybrid format (in person and online) is used for most courses. Course assignments and expectations are geared to the needs of the working nurse professional. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is prepared to practice in an expanded role and to provide healthcare to individuals, families, and/or groups in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, homes, hospitals, institutions, offices, industry, schools, community agencies, public and private clinics, and private practice. The NP acts independently and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to deliver healthcare services by conducting comprehensive health assessments aimed at health promotion and disease prevention. NPs also diagnose and manage common acute illnesses, with referral as appropriate, and manage stable chronic conditions in a variety of settings.
